RETRACING D. H. LAWRENCE’S TRAVELS TO SARDINIA 100 YEARS ON

D. H. LAWRENCE’S “SEA AND SARDINIA” THE FILM AND PHOTOBOOK LAUNCHED ON 29TH. & 30TH. OCTOBER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CAGLIARI

On the 19th August, 2021 we announced the rerelease of the book “Sea and Sardinia” written by David Herbert Lawrence after the 1st. Word War.

We now advise with great pleasure that the book has now been released as a film and photo documentary.

By way of a reminder Lawrence wrote his thoughts on Sardinia when he was living in Sicily, Sea and Sardinia records Lawrence's journey to Sardinia and back in January 1921. It reveals his response to a new landscape and people and his ability to transmute the spirit of place into literary art.

Like his other travel writings the book is also a shrewd inquiry into the political and social values of an era which saw the rise of communism and fascism. On one level an indictment of contemporary materialism.

Lawrence nevertheless presents an  optimistic view, celebrating the creativity of the human spirit and seeking in the fundamental laws which governed human nature in the past fresh inspiration for the present.

In closing on Lawrence, he described Sardinia in this way - "This land resembles no other place. Sardinia is something else. Enchanting spaces and distances to travel-nothing finished, nothing definitive. It is like freedom itself".
